Access to Domestic and Foreign Markets
Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Access to Domestic and Foreign Markets, the final of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME's Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Throughout the Industrie 2030 consultations with nearly 1,250 business executives from across the country, several practical recommendations were identified to expand market access, including:

  • Create promotional campaigns celebrating Canadian-made products;
  • Leverage Canada’s domestic procurement system to foster new product development, innovation and local production;
  • Negotiate free and fair trade agreements with reciprocal access for manufactured goods and strong trade enforcement mechanisms; and
  • Improve export support programs.

Building a Strong and Skilled Workforce for Growth
Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Building a Strong and Skilled Workforce for Growth, the fourth of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME's Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Throughout the Industrie 2030 consultations with nearly 1,250 business executives from across the country, several critical and practical recommendations were identified to address skills shortages, including:

  • Improve engagement of youth, women and under-represented in manufacturing careers to growth the domestic skilled labour pool;
  • Strengthen linkages between industry and post-secondary institutions to improve alignment of skills and needs of industry;
  • Expand government support for business-led training initiatives and management leadership development; and
  • Improve access to foreign trained workers.

Fostering Innovation, Commercialization, and New Product Development
Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Fostering Innovation, Commercialization, and New Product Development, the third of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME's Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

According to Statistics Canada, the number of manufacturers who reported at least one innovation dropped from nearly 50 per cent in 2007 to less than 44 per cent by 2014, while the number of manufacturers reporting no innovations more than doubled from less than 19 per cent to nearly 39 per cent. To ramp up innovation and commercialization in Canada, we recommend:

  • Strengthen and expand the Scientific Research and Experimental Development program;
  • Implement a Patent Box system to reward product commercialization in Canada;
  • Create a manufacturing commercialization investment fund to provide risk-sharing supports;
  • Expand funding for industry-driven programs aimed at post-secondary partnerships; and
  • Leverage government procurement to foster R&D.

Accelerating Adoption of Advanced Manufacturing
Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Accelerating Adoption of Advanced Manufacturing, the second of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME's Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Based on research and consultation through the CME led Industrie 2030 initiative, Canadian manufacturers are not investing in advanced technologies. More than 60 per cent all respondents to CME’s survey stated they do not presently use advanced manufacturing technologies in their operations. And this is reflected directly in the statistics – manufacturing investment in machinery and equipment in Canada has fallen by nearly five per cent between 2009 and 2014, hitting a 30-year low in that year. In the US investment has risen by 58 per cent over the same time period. In fact, few industrialized countries have a worse record than Canada.

Manufacturing a Competitive Business Environment in Canada
Canadian Manufactures & Exporters (CME) along with its strategic partners, releases Manufacturing a Competitive Business Environment in Canada, the first of five reports that provide detailed analysis and recommendations stemming from CME's Industrie 2030 initiative aimed at doubling manufacturing output by 2030.

Based on research and consultation through the CME led Industrie 2030 initiative, the business environment in Canada is getting worse. Increases in business taxes, regulatory demands, and energy costs along with reductions in government support programs were among the most cited challenges that are making it more difficult and costly to do business in Canada. Nearly half of all respondents to CME's survey stated the federal government does not support the growth of the company. That share rises to 60 per cent for provincial governments. And this is reflected directly in the statistics - for every $1 invested by a manufacturer in Canada, $8.65 is invested by an equivalent manufacturer in the United States.

Management Issues Survey 2016
CME’s biannual Management Issues Survey (MIS) is one of our most important tools for taking the pulse of the manufacturing community. It provides valuable insight into the mindset, aspirations and concerns of manufacturers – both in terms of their day-to-day struggles as well as their longer-term strategic goals. In total, 553 companies responded to CME’s 2016 MIS. There was strong representation from across Canada, and a majority of businesses operated in more than one province.
